  1. honestly i do not like some of the realignments seen in recent seasons. i would be happy to step away a little to let some conferences make sense.
  2. Heroes Get Remembered But Legends Never Die Sr RB Ryan Bowman 23 Attempts, 234 yards for 2 Touchdowns, 6 Catches on 9 Targets for 39 yards, 1 receiving Touchdown. Vs FSU The Florida Gators 2024 Season has come to an end, and it is a bit of a mix bag. The Gators came into this season with one of the toughest schedules in the country, and a lot of talk about who would lead this team. Even the coaching staff seemed unsure who was going to start at many of the positions. There was only one position on the offense that was locked down. Runningback Ryan Bowman took the starting job 2 seasons ago, half way through the year and never gave it back. The then true sophomore has been the heart and soul of the Gator offense the last few seasons, and has truly become a fan favorite, as well as a respected player around the NCAA. The Senior ran his way through the FSU defense in his final game of the 2024 season, and helped secure the first win against their instate rival in Tallahassee. But he is not the only senior leaving behind a legacy for the many Freshman to live up to. The Gators finished the season 4-8, but the Freshman heavy team were very close to finishing the season 8-4. The future is bright, with more than one coach claiming the Gators to be a team to watch in a season or two, as they could potentially be up to something special in the swamp. But this isn't about the future, this is about the past and celebrating the legacies of the young men who are paving the way for players like Edward Watkins, Max Howard and Edgar Mendoza. RB Ryan Bowman, 32 Games, 562 Rushing attempts, 3049 Rushing yards for 28 touchdowns, 5.4 YPC, 146 Receptions on 197 Targets for 974 yards, 7 Touchdowns As mentioned above, Ryan Bowman was the heart and soul of this offense. He became a full time starter last season in 2023, and was the primal focal point of a very run heavy offense. on 197 attempts, he powered forward with 1411 rushing yards and ended the season with 11 touchdowns. During this season he shared touches with RB Mason Matthews, FB Tommy Murton and QB Shareece Kelly who all ended the season with over a 135 touches themselves. While he had fewer touches this season with a more pass focused offense, Bowman still managed 947 yards and 9 touchdowns behind a very young offensive line. If Florida could find a way to bring him back for one more season, he could run behind an offensive line with some experience who would be able to open the run lanes a little more. He could easily break his 11 Touchdown season and probably end the year with another 1000 yard season. But as it currently stands, over 3000 yards and almost 30 touchdowns in 2.5 seasons is nothing to sneer at. Bowman was also a very reliable target for his QBs as he racked up almost 1000 yards and 7 touchdowns the last two seasons. Most of his receptions came from behind the line on screens and dump off passes. to bail out his QB when he was in trouble. WR Bruce Gedeon, 36 Games, 109 Receptions on 180 Targets for 1695 Yards, 13 Touchdowns Bruce Gedeon will not be a household name, and even for loyal diehard Gators, his name might be a little fuzzy. Why? Well up until this season, he hadn't done much of anything. In fact, many fans were upset when the final depth chart was released, and he was listed as WR1 over freshman Edward Watkins. With a full season behind us...Coach Weeze made the right call. Gedeon Exploded this season and became a favorite Target for Max Howard. He was the only body in the WR room with any experience, and it became very important for Howard. Before this season, Bruce only recorded 308 yards receiving. He went on to finish his Florida Career as the all time leader in yards, receptions, targets, touchdowns and Game appearances. His Experience wasn't just the most in the WR room, he also now leads all former Gators with his 36 stat sheet appearances. Should be noted, Ryan Bowman is 2nd with 32. Not a bad Senior season to have, and he should become an inspiring story for other young Gators looking to leave an impact on the Gator record books. This season he was targeted 118 times, for 83 receptions, 1387 yards and 9 touchdowns. Each of those 4 numbers are also a single season record for the Gators. So it is safe to say, Mr Bruce Gedeon wrote the Record book for the Gators. A book he hopes is rewritten very soon. "These coaches man, they are bringing in some dawgs this season. they went out and got a 5*, and a couple 4* receivers to replace me. Plus they got Ed(Edward Watkins) already here... and he has really been coming along the last couple weeks... he's going to be great next season and the years to come. I'm excited. I hope they break and double everything I've done. I don't want to be remembered in the years to come..I want my name forgotten quick because that means this school... this team that ive given so much of myself to.. it means they are doing great things and reaching new heights." These words came from Gedeon about his records following their big win over FSU, where he had five receptions on 6 targets for 148 yards, and two touchdowns. Another big game for a senior going out. SS/CB Chris Nieves, 30 Games, 140 tackles, 7 asst tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 7 Int Chris Nieves is the only Senior Defensive player who will make this list. Nieves has been a staple part of the defense the last couple seasons. His 140 tackles is second to only now NFL talent and former starting ILB, Keenan Williams(163). The next closest player only has 101 tackles. Safe to say these two were tackling machines. Nieves is also special in that he has played multiple roles for the Gators. He played Corner the majority of last season before moving back to safety this season. His 7 Career interceptions also lead the team. However... we don't expect that to last long as Freshman CB Edgar Mendoza already has 4, and the defense should be getting better next season and the season after. But for now his 7 stands apart as well. A common theme with the seniors going out, he to made a big impact on the game against FSU. He lead the defense with 6 tackles, and managed to pick off Colt Mcintyre as well. His Int lead to a 32 yard Touchdown pass from Howard on the very next play. C Tim Grugier-Hill, 33 Games, Center Tim Grugier-Hill Has been a long time Gator and presence on that Offensive line. He has been a star at the position and has been pro ready the last couple seasons. He will be drafted by an NFL team and they will be lucky to have him. A very very underrated center, Grugier-Hill has been and continues to be one of the best Centers in the SEC. Coaches love his ability to move and shift his feet(A+ agility), and few defenders can beat this man off the ball and push pass him as he continues to bully the middle of defenses(A+ Strength). Many lineman have a natural preference to Run blocking or pass blocking, that can not be said for Tim as he has played in three very difference offenses and has excelled at all 3. Each has required the line to do something different. Though, he probably gets a slight nod as a passblocker( PB A, RB A-). Tim Grugier-Hill will be sorely missed.
  3. Big dime line up might not be right. the picture below shows the example it should have CB 1-3, FS and SS 1&2. the gameplan shows CB1,2 and 4. I believe CB3 should be on the field not 4.
  4. Florida Recruiting Starting Strong Despite on the Field Set Backs, Florida Continues to Recruit Strong. The University of Florida opened the season strong with a big win in the swamp against the 15th Ranked, Penn State Nittany Lions. After taking an early season bye, Florida returned on the road against Maryland, where the two teams exchanged blows back and forth until ultimately a pair of missed Field Goals cost the gators the win where they lost 24-20. Returning to the swamp the following week, Kentucky Came to town and blew the breaks off the Gators 42-9. Kentucky Runningback Niuman Williams had himself a day with 202 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. Starting the season 1-2, the Gators very tough stretch continues as the head to Neyland Stadium to take on the Volunteers of Tennessee. The Volunteers have been a very big thorn in the Gators side, outscoring the Gators 83-24 the last two seasons. Brandon Savage have been lighting opponents up with the help of B.J Flash, and look to take on a very young secondary. The Gators have allowed a 94 pass yards per game , however the Volunteers will be the first pass heavy team that the Gators have played this season. The young Secondary will have a chance to show who they really are against perhaps the best QB in the SEC if not the country. The following few Weeks do not get any easier for a Gator team who are starting 13 freshman, and 3 sophomores, as they will follow up Tennessee with Texas A&M, LSU, Texas and finally in Jacksonville for their rivalry game with Georgia. Despite the Season so far, and the Season to come, the Gators are staring out strong on the recruiting trail as the Coaching staff have manage to land a pair of Big targets. 5* WR Jonathan Wilson, University Christian, Jacksonville Florida First and foremost, the most valuable player on the Recruiting board, Jonathan Wilson, a 5* Wide Receiver out of Jacksonville Florida by way of University Christian. Coach Weeze has made the North East Florida City a major recruiting spot for the Gators. The Last couple of cycles, Coach Weeze has landed every major recruit from the 904 area(With the exception of the UF to FSU flip of QB Colt McIntyre). The trend continued as Wilson announced his commitment to Florida over the likes of Texas Tech, Minnesota, West Virginia, Washington and fellow SEC rival South Carolina. Max Howard went to Twitter minutes before the commitment was announced with a simple "We got HIM". Next season, the possession receiver will join Edward Watkins and give Wilson another High Value target to throw to. Wilson after announcing his commitment replied to Howard's Tweet "Trust Bro, they're not done, I'm bringing a BIG friend with me." Florida fans have already gone wild speculating who he could mean. 4* FS Clayton Murphy, North Florida Christian, Tallahassee Florida The Offense wasn't the only side of the ball that saw a new addition. 4* Safety out of Tallahassee Florida, the North Florida Christian Star will be joining a very small, and very talented safety room. The coaching staff have been completely revamping the DB room. When Coach Weeze arrived three years ago, the defense was a mess. The team as a whole was a mess, but the defense more so. The amount of talented he has infused on the defense side of the ball has been astounding. Murphy will be Joining a team where he has every bit of opportunity to start next season as both starting safety spots are currently being played by seniors who will be leaving at the end of the season. The future for the Gators seem bright, and the coaching staff has continued their recruiting excellence. With some more talent on the way, we can't wait to see the future stars of the Florida Gators.
  5. Max Howard also reportedly took to Twitter. “FSU is for losers and people who can’t cut it at a real program. On an unrelated note, Congrats Mike! FSU was indeed a choice.”
  6. Week 2 is in the books! This week the SEC went 10-5 with 1 team on a Bye. We here at the Weeze News network know our readers are SEC fans, and therefore can't actually read. 7. Freshman QB Maximillian Howard in Spring Practice Florida Gators have been aching to see their new young stars under the lights. With spring practices and games underway, Gator fans did not have to wait long to see the future. Florida opened up spring games as one of the handful of teams playing on Thursday night. What a Thursday night it was! It was a night of possibility and reason to be excited not only for this coming season, but for the next handful of seasons. The Gators offense struggled much of the last two seasons. The Gators have had only three players over 400 receiving yards in 2 seasons, and only 1 over 500. That being said, rushing they've had much more success, however when you are in a conference with the likes of Brandon Savage, you need to air it out at times to keep up. Thursday night, the Gator offense exploded and gave off the appearance that it was not the first time these young men played together. Freshman Quarterback, Max Howard came out with 25 completions of 33 attempts for 245 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was able to spread the ball around to seven different targets and keep the opposing defense guessing. Which is exactly what Headcoach Weeze and New offense coordinator wanted. At the close of last season, Coach Weeze in an attempt to make it look like he was making changes, brought in a new Offensive coordinator, and a new Defensive Coordinator. The goal was to rebuild the team from the ground up and hope the new blood from recruiting could help lead to wins. It can't be denied that the quality of players that have been coming to Gainesville in recent season is much much better. But the quality of play has not yet improved. We might be seeing the page start to turn as now only did Howard have a great game, he found a great connection with new Freshman receiver, Edward Watkins. Targeted 8 times, Watkins caught the ball 7 times for 44 yards. While not eye popping numbers, those 7 receptions did lead to 2 touchdowns. Not bad for a Freshman Wide receiver. But it wasn't just the young bloods who were making plays. Bruce Gedeon, the only starting receiver returning from last season(16 receptions, 191 yards, 3 touchdowns), had what would have been his biggest career game. 6 receptions on 8 targets for 112 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Bowman, the senior RB who is probably not as well known as he should be in the national spot light, has heard nothing but how great Howard will be, decided to remind everyone whose team this still was. The Gator Star, and all time leading rusher, ran for 237 yards on 22 attempts, 1 rushing touchdown, and 62 yards off of 7 receptions. He had himself a day. The O-line came out and busted open running lanes for him and the rest of the offense out of the backfield. Senior CB Andy Marte The Defense for the Gators underwent some changes this off season. Spring practice and spring games are the first look at the new identity. In the past, Coach Weeze rode a pretty heavy 4-3 Man defense. Last season they upped the aggressiveness of the defense. While it helped, it still wasn't enough to keep them in more games. 24.8 points allowed per game last season was an increase from 23.9 PAPG in 2022. Run defense increased dramatically, allowing 500 yards fewer last season than 2022. However they saw a huge increase in passing yards allowed. The defense as a whole needs to step up and make plays. They saw improvement in one area, and huge drop offs in others. New defensive coordinator wants to see huge improvements in 2 major areas. Sacks, and take aways. Last season, the Gators saw a small increase in sacks, taking down opponents 23 times(up from 15 the year before). The did not improve in take aways as the last two seasons both ended with 15 take aways. The Spring game saw the hard work players have been putting into this. Not only did the defense force 3 take aways, they also scored touchdowns off 2 of them. Its going to be hard to lose when your defense is also scoring. Michigan State Jose Gonzalez was taken down 3 times as well. Both Defensive Tackles put in some work getting to the quarterback as True Freshman Michael Baig and sophomore Scott Anthony both came away with 1. Defensive ends Brandon Martin and Joseph Kloeckner both also got to the quarterback, but split the sack. If you're getting that kind of pass rush up the middle, and your ends are still getting to the qb, that's a very good thing. But Florida got production and quality play from all 3 phases of defense. The pass rush and Run defense both played well as the defense allowed only 65 yards on the ground(1 rushing touchdown). We already mentioned the 3 sacks. The Middle saw Linebacker Mahesh smith intercept and return it for a touchdown. He also added 4 tackles to his stats. Freshman Middle Linebacker Francisco Reza lead the team with 6 tackles. In the backfield, true freshman Corner Edgar Mendoza, along with his 4 tackles, managed to pickoff the quarterback. Shaun Thomas, a freshman safety, had the third pick and also returned it for a touchdown. Andy Marte is one of three seniors starting on defense. everyone else is a Freshman or a sophomore(with more freshman starting). Marte is the only starting Corner back with any experience as Edgar Mendoza and Kevin Moore are both true freshman. That being said, Marte has quickly become a leader on this defense, and a very vocal component for the secondary. He has really tackled up the two young backs behind him and has stated multiple times this might be the best secondary Florida has assembled over the last few seasons. He thinks there is defiently a few NFL talent level players starting. He feels both safeties could be playing on Sunday, as well as the two freshman playing with him in the other corner spots. "We are going to surprise a lot of people this season. They're not ready for us. This isnt the same team. We are only getting better" The young man said after thursday nights victory.
  8. Florida is finally gonna beat Georgia. And finish the season with a conference record better than 2-6
  9. Croot Sean McIntyre TE Vertical Threat 6'4 243 Orange Park Orange Park High School FL for flavor, this is younger brother of current FSU QB, Colt McIntyre
  10. Maximilian Howard Putting in Work Max Howard and Brother Matt Howard Work Out Together For Coming Season Elite 11 Winner, And Florida 5* QB Max Howard Max Howard, Florida's newest Star on Campus is already putting in the work for the coming season as he aims to be the Day 1 starter in the fall. Coach Weeze has already publicly stated "No one will be an automatic starter so long as I am the Coach. When the season ends, so does your title as starter if you hadn't lost it already." Some people are just tossing this up to Coach Speak as there is no way certain players, such as senior RB Ryan Bowman, will not be automatically named the starter before summer and fall camp opens up. But, it would be foolish for the Florida Coaching staff not to take a QB competition seriously. Despite the Elite 11 Winner Max Howard coming in already looking super impressive for an 18 year old kid, they do have a redshirt Freshmen Kevin Jones who has already spent a year in the system, learning and working to improve his own game. Jones isn't chopped liver either. The 4* QB came in with his own little hype and only got redshirted due to the 2023 roster. The Staff made a choice to go run heavy with a lack of receiving options and an O-line weak in pass protection. A problem the Florida Gators have made impressive Steps to improve. While pass catchers should still be a priority during this recruiting season, Howard and Jones should have at least a few options to rely on. Howard however, seems to have taken up the challenge and is putting in the work this off season with his older, NFL brother, Matthew Howard. The former FSU Stand out has his own work to do as he came off a very disappointing season. As the Jaguars went into sell mode, Howard found himself placed into the starting QB role. While he did show promise at times, it was apparently he was not where Steven Connolly was. The Howard brothers pushed each other and developed a whole work out routine with help of noted QB coach and trainer, Bill Bob. Coach Bill Bob helped both men refine their mechanics and pushed their limits. Max Howard Specifically worked on reading "defenses" and trying to identify where the blitz was coming and the type of cover they were lined up in. "He is a smart kid. And for someone just coming out of highschool, he has an amazing Grasp of what he is seeing. He needs to just become quicker at reading it and reacting to it. Going to the SEC he is going to be playing big boy defenses and he is playing on a team that is still very much reloading. His best weapon will be his mind. Get the ball out quick and take away the defenses ability to get into his face. let the receivers create yards after the catch." Coach Bob said of Howard. He would also continue, praising his physical conditioning stating he already very much looks like a NFL QB. The Elite 11 Winner(and supposedly the best winner of all time) has seen a lot of praise, but compared to his brother, the young man comes in very humble and recognizes the opportunity before him. "It is great having all of those praises and expectations" Max Howard told media members. "But I honestly haven't done anything yet. I have a chance to come into a program and the up and really help lead them to future success. But I haven't done it yet. I might have won the off season, but unless we are getting W's in Gainesville...what does it matter?" The Fans very much agree. Despite the relative success of the previous season, there were still some major embarrassing losses that hurt this Gator team. Most notably a 3 game road stretch against South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia. SCAR was a ten point loss 27-17, Kentucky was an absolute embarrassing second half rout 41-24, and Despite a 20 point lead over UGA, the Gators again blew the second half letting them win 24-20. If you look at Florida's passing yards over those 3 games..it is not good. 49 yards, 16 yards, 107 yards. These kind of numbers are not acceptable and Fans are putting all of their hopes that Max Howard can be their savior...and finally Beat Georgia. Not to mention Tennessee and LSU who have blown out the Gators the last two seasons. Florida's Star QB isn't just working out with his brother however. The brothers have invited true Freshman WR Edward Watkins, and Senior WR Bruce Gedeon to work out with them. Two very good choices as both should be the primary target for Howard this coming season. Gedeon is the last true experienced receiver left on the roster. Watkins is a 4* stud brought in this season with Howard and is expected to be the best weapon seen at Florida in some time. While Coach Weeze has done a great job rebuilding the Defense and O-line, he has had a hard time convincing WRs to join the Gators. Howard should embrace every opportunity to grow with these guys and develop the chemistry needed to make this duo dangerous. But this is more than just about Howard. This is also a good chance for Watkins, and Gedeon to create their own chemistry with each other. A chance for Gedeon to try and help Watkins improve and figure some things out before camp and the grueling season gets underway. While Watkins has all the potential in the world, he is still raw, and has a long way to go before he is considered a top threat in the conference. Doom and Gloom aside, Florida Gators should be excited. Max Howard looks like a stud. The starting title won't just be given to him(as it shouldn't be), but to not expect a potential generational talent to win that role, and help lead this team to a new level of success, is unimaginable. He is doing the right things. He is saying the right things. The coaches now need to do their job, and make sure he is put into a system that he can thrive in.
  11. Oh this will change everything i think. Recruiting is about to get much more challenging for everyone and you will really need to pay attention to schemes and players.
  12. Top Recruits of the Florida Gators 2023 class. The season has ended and recruiting has wrapped up. Florida had a strong start to the recruiting season, but seem to fizzle out toward the end and couldn't recover the steam they created early despite, according to some, unexpected on field success. We will take a look at some of the top recruits who committed to Florida and who the fans hope can bring quick change to a program who has been trying to rebuild from the ground up. The Florida Class of 2023 saw 22 commits with 3 walk ons. 8 of the 22 were 4 or 5* recruits who all have a very big shot of starting during the 2024 season. Total Recruits: 25 Class Ranked: 9th SEC Ranked: 2nd QB: Maximillian Howard, 5*, Balanced, Bolles Florida. Easily the crown jewel of this class for the Gators, Howard comes in as not only one of the top recruits in this class, but one of the top recruits EVER. Coach Weeze locked on and never let go. After seeing FSU flip Colt McIntyre last season, Coach Weeze wasn't going to let it happen two seasons in a row. The Elite 11 MVP committed to Florida and is expected to be a Day 1 starter, with the hope of finally getting the offense in Gainesville putting up points. Last season the Gators put up 24.2 PPG. A season high for the Gators under coach Weeze. Howard is coming in with a Cannon for an arm. His ability to zip the ball between defenders to his receiver also can not be understated for such a young player. Other Qbs: Edward Carlson, 3*, Pocket, Marion Illinois WR: Edward Watkins, 4*, Route Runner, Melbourne Florida. Watkins is the first 4* or better receiver Coach Weeze has ever manage to get. Unfortunately for him his struggles continued as Watkins was the only one of three 4* targets that committed to Florida, with the other two choosing to go to FIU and Tulane. With how anemic the receivers have been, another big time receiver would have really helped young Howard grow in this offense. However Watkins is also expected to be a big contributor and easily the number one by his sophomore season. Coming in, he already has a nice twitch and high energy to help him go up against opposing defenses. OG: Bubba Payne, 4*, Pass Blocking, Flemming Island Florida Payne is another top grab by coach Weeze, who has been doing a stellar job rebuilding the offensive line in Florida. Payne was a top five OG recruit. Whats more, he is a dominate passblocker coming out of a system in High school that runs similar to what Coach Weeze wants to run and tried to run his first season at Florida. He is also a perfect compliment to Kelvin Williams, a 4* guard and current starter at RG. The two of them will help build a solid interior to protect Howard. Payne is quick on his feet, and comes in already above average pass blocking ability, though he will need to build up his strength if he is going survive at run blocking at this level. OT: Christopher Turnbull, 4*, Run Blocking, Oviedo Florida The first of two Tackles signed to this class, Florida hopes it found a replacement for senior star Tackle, Justin Crossen on the right side of the line. At 6'5, 285lbs, Turnbull is a little smaller for what Coach Weeze would want, but his ability to move and bully opponents made him an easy target. He can be nasty at the point of attack, and has a strong motor. Pass blocking needs some work, but he should be a solid player on the right side. Joshua Leale, 4*, Balanced, Naples Florida The second Tackle, Leale played both tackle positions in High School, but Florida is betting on him being their anchor on the Left side of the line. With current Left Tackle, Jeremy Blair, graduating, Leale has every chance to step in day one and lock it down as his job. However unlike Turnbull, Leale has competition for that spot. Junior Tackle Beau Thompson only loss out on the starting role because of the offense Florida ran this season. He is a pure pass blocking tackle who struggled to hold his own in the run game. At 6'5, 303 lbs, he moves quickly on his feet. If Leale can show competence and be nasty, he could make it his job for the next four years. DE: John Harwell, 4*, Speed, St Johns Florida Harwell is the only player on the list that is joining a position group that has other multiple 4* players. However none of those players have started playing meaningful snaps. Brandon Martin has made a few appearances in relief duty, but has been mostly playing the backup role. While young and hard to really compete with older experienced players, Martin has been disappointing so far in his Florida Career. Next season however he is expected to make more of an impact after a year of getting some game time. Joseph Kloeckner, is expected to be the Left side DE, with Martin the possible RE. Harwell has a real shot at competing and winning that job. He is just as fast, and has a bigger build (6'4 250 lbs) than martin(6'4 237 lbs) which may allow him to physically handle opposing offenses. Either way, Florida has quietly been building their pass rush. DT: Michael Baig, 4*, Pass Rusher, Minneola Florida Baig is expected to be the day one starter at DT. It is hopeful that he can bring a passrush presence up the middle and get after Qbs such as Brandon Savage, and keep them uncomfortable. The coaches feel he is a much more talented Marcus Miller, who provided unexpected pressure and allowed the ends to be more effective. How effective Baig is in his first season will probably depend on who is partner is in the middle. Without playing a down of college football, baig looks to be the best pass rushing DT on the roster. FS: Shaun Thomas, 4*, Zone Coverage, Tampa Florida Thomas is another player that will be joining this Florida Squad with every chance at starting. However unlike the other players, he will have to compete with 2 other players, Fr John Lee who redshirted this season, and Joe Wright who will be entering his Senior season and has plenty of starting experience. However... his experience all comes at the Corner position and not safety. Wright will have to show he can play safety much better than two very gifted freshman, with Thomas possibly the most gifted physically of the three. We could also see Thomas take the route that Wright did and spend a season or two play at nickel or even as the 4th corner in 6 DB packages. Florida is very happy with its 9th ranking class. A lot of potential starters out the gate with a lot of talent that they didn't have a few seasons ago when Weeze took over as Coach. The coaching staff has already said they will be taking a small break before starting the process all over again and start deciding where they need help to keep the rebuild going. But this coming season should be a fun one. Florida has not looked good against their rivals except for UGA. This season they might surprise a team or two with their young Stars. 14. Florida Season Stats A Look Back, and a Peak Ahead Florida Defense Celebrating Turnover. The regular season has finally come to a close. The best teams in the various conferences are preparing to fight it out to see who will hold their conferences trophies. Others are preparing for a post season Bowl game. The rest will be emptying out their lockers and calling it a season and enjoying some time off before spring practices roll back around. For the Florida Gators, they are awaiting to see who and where they will be playing their first Bowl game under coach Weeze. At the start of the season, the hope that the Gators would reach the post season was slim. The Gators lost a lot of major contributors last season and the starters for this season were seen as nothing more than place holders while the new wave of recruits learned the playbook and adapted to the speed and strength of the college game. That being said, the scrappy Florida team came out and continued to fight all season surprising many with their ability to score and wear down opponents. Unfortunately a tough stretch of games in the middle of the season where they played South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia consecutively all on the road, nearly derailed the season. Florida however did have a massive increase in production this season compared to the previous season. The scrappy Gators jumped from 197 to 302 in total points scored, and had 5,072 offensive yards, up from 3,938 yards a season before. Defensively it was a bit of a mix bag. They improved in many areas, but failed in others. For example, the Defense allowed 287 points in 2022, and 306 this season. Total Yards allowed, the unit allowed 5,242 yards, up from 4,802 a season before. But when you start digging into the numbers, the defense made big improvements on run defense. 2,527 down to 1,903. Even when you look at the pass yards allowed, the defense allowed 3,339, up from 2,275 a year before. Most of that can be attributed to Tennessee, who had a massive 703 yard game. The Defense did have more sacks this season as well as more interceptions. Look to the coaching staff however to focus on Fumbles and recovering. There was a big drop in the defense forcing fumbles this season. They also did better this season getting the ball carrier down behind the line. Up Next we will take a look at individual units and how they did. Sr QB Shareece Kelly, 129 of 272 attempts, for 1248 yards, 12 TD, 2 Ints, 100.53 QBR, 135 Rushing Attempts for 705 yards, 2 TDs Quarterback play through much of the season was very much questionable. Shareece Kelly won the job right before the regular season to the surprise of some media members and analyst. Many thought true freshman Kevin Jones should have been given the reigns and let the kid grow. Now With Max Howard coming in, who knows if Jones will ever see the field as a Gator. Regardless of who should have started, Kelly played the games and lead the Gators to their highest win total and Coach Weeze first Bowl Season. Passing was poor. Simple as that. Through 12 games, the Gators had a total of 1,319 passing yards, 1,248 of that belonged to Kelly. He only posted a 47% completion rating, and a 100.53 QBR. His 12 Touchdowns however is a School record for a single season(and career. UF has had 3 different starting qbs over 3 season.) passing touchdowns. He did do some damage on the ground however making it hard for some defenses to get a real sense of what the gators were gonna do. Kelly booked 135 rushing attempts for 705 yards, with 2 more touchdowns to be added to his total. Looking ahead, current freshman Jones has a small leg up on Howard having been in Coach Weeze system for a year, but he is gonna have to work hard if he doesn't want the 5 star to come in and take his job. This 4 headed monster(including Kell) was lead by Junior Runingback Ryan Bowman. Bowman was thrown into the fire last season when Sam Haynes started to struggle. Bowman held the starting role since and continued with a strong presence into this season. In fact he was only a 100 yards short of doubling his total last season on the same number of carries with 1281 yards on 180 attempts. He also lead the team with 11 rushing touchdowns. He was also an efficient target in the passing game with 20 completions on 29 targets for 145 yards. He was able to score 2 more touchdowns. Mason Matthews saw some action last season..and to be frank is lucky he saw any action this season. He worked hard and coaches praised his hard work in the off season. Matthews followed up his 54 yard season with 877 yards off 132 attempts and six touchdowns. He pulled in 14 passes on 18 targets to add 87 yards. Its a shame this was his final year of eligibility as he seem to finally find his stride, with a few games even out performing Bowman. The final head that hasn't been mentioned yet, Tommy Murton. Officially listed as a FB, Murton, much like Matthews, saw some work last season and didn't impress...not on the ground anyway. The 4 Star FB put in the work in the off season and slimmed down a little bit and worked on his power. He became the true change of pace back that bullied his way into the defense leaving them all a little sore. Murton ran for 754 yards on 138 attempts, five touchdowns. He was targeted 13 times with 8 catches, 66 yards and two more touchdowns. Both Murton and Bowman are returning next season to build off this strong season. Its hard to know if this group is so bleak because of QB play...or if QB play was bleak because of receiving play. If we are gonna be honest, probably both. When looking at the stats, no player who caught a pass had a completion rate over 60% that didn't come out of the RB room. Emilio Williams is the only one but his two passes only showed up in 1 game. Johnathan Kling, a Senior TE will end his career at Florida leading the '23 season with 358 yards, as well as tied with WR Bruce Gedeon for touchdown receptions with only 3. Kai Benkert, a senior WR was second in yards with 336 yards. No one else managed to get over 200 yards. Kevin Howard or Kevin Jones will have to put in some work next season. No experienced TE will be returning next season, and only Gedeon will be returning with any experience in the WR room. Luckily for one of those two QBS, Edward Watkins should be joining the team and he should provide some talent in the WR that hasn't been seen at Florida. Unfortunately that Young man is going to have to grow up and be a number 1 before he has a chance to see a play book. Gedeon just has not shown to be a reliable target over the last two seasons. Hopefully he steps it up for his final season and can finally shine with real QB play coming. They made big improvements in some areas, back tracked in others. The run defense improved, but the pass defense dropped off in pass protection, however they were able to force some more take aways. They were also able to get after the QB more. First you have to start with the Heart and Soul of this defense. Keenan Williams finished the Regular Season with 81 tackles, 5 asst, 19.5 tfl and a FR. Williams, a senior ILB has been one of the best tacklers in the conference the last two seasons, finishing 3rd this season. The senior will be hard to replace and sorely missed next season. Another Senior who had a good season, and tied fourth for sacks this season, Chad Iyiegbuniwe. 6.5 sacks on the season, he holds the single season record for the Gators. This comes off of a season where he failed to get a single sack. When turning to the secondary, Darrell Capela, a senior CB, has been working. The senior registered 42 tackles, and a team leading 4 interceptions. The defense will look completely different next season. A lot of fresh faces will be making starts. The entire secondary for the most part will be new starters. The D-Line will be completely different. The LB unit is probably the only unit with a major starter returning. Elvis Thompson, who has played both Right and Left OLB. Thompson and FS Joel Wright will likely be the only two current starters to return to the defense. Wright however Would be Starting at FS, not the CB role he has been playing. Fans should be excited however. A lot of young guys will be playing next season yes, however 8 players will be joining the defense who are 4 stars. This should help infuse a lot of talent to the defense. 15. Gators Dismantle Tigers! Florida Powers its way to 6th Win and Bowl Bid Jr RB Ryan Bowman, 20 attempts for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns, 2 catches for 12 yards, 1 touchdown. The Gators return to Gainesville following a dismantling of the Missouri Tigers for their first conference road win of the season, and just the second while under the direction of Coach Weeze. The first came against Vandy in Week 8 last season when the Gators won 38-7. The Gators have struggled horribly on the road this season, honestly they have struggled on the road the last two seasons. Every road game last season was a big loss. This season... the Gators have improved slightly with two road wins and 1 close loss. However that close loss was against Georgia in Jacksonville where the Bulldogs pulled off a 21 point comeback to beat the Gators 24-21. Every other road loss was not at a neutral site and the Gators have loss by ten points or more. The worst being against LSU last week falling 34-7. This win was not only important in restoring some moral after the LSU beatdown, but the win allowed the Gators to be Bowl eligible for the first time. It was said early in the season that this team was perhaps the worst on paper that coach Weeze has coached in his 3 seasons. Given how good that Arkansas team was, and how much better the Florida team was last season compared to this season, Few expected this team to win more than 2-3 games. Yet here we are with 6 games in the W column, and a chance for a 7th next week against a Florida State team with a young QB coming into a hostile environment and a Florida D-Line that has been surprisingly active at getting to the QB. Sr WR Kai Benkert 3 receptions for 38 yards. The Gators offense rebounded after losing to LSU last week. They Scored a season high of 45 points, as well as a career high for Coach Weeze. The Florida Faithful have not had much to cheer about with the QB play of the Gators really the last two years, but much more this season as Kelly has just been the best option of a bad group. On the ground he has been very good running the triple option. But when ever he dropped back to pass, you can't help but hold your breath. He has been, to his credit, been able to keep the ball away from the opposing defenses allowing only 2 int. His Accuracy an appalling 47% kind of makes that less impressive though. Still, he is only 2 TD away from having the single touchdown record for Florida(until Howard hopefully wipes that record off the map) and Saturday he had a hell of a game. By far his most impressive, he was 10 of 14 with 2 passing touchdowns. His backup, Matt Goldman 3 of 4 and 47 passing yards made his own Prescence felt. The two of them helped keep drives alive, and manage to score a few points for themselves. As far as their receiving weapons, its hard to say anyone had a great day, but when you have 9 different receiving targets, no one is going to look like an allstar. Sr Kai Benkert did walk away with the most receiving yards at 38 yards on 3 receptions. The heart and soul of this offense, as it has been all season has been Junior Runningback, Ryan Bowman. Bowman had another wonderful day as he continues to push the single season and career rushing record higher and higher. On 20 carries, Bowman rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, he caught 2 passes for 12 yards, and a receiving touchdown. So far on the season, he has ran for a total of 1184 yards and 11 touchdowns. Add another 18 receptions for 138 yards, 1 touchdown. Considering how often he shares carries, he has been putting in some work. FB Tommy Murton, RB Mason Matthews and of course Shereece Kelly all put in solid work on the ground as well. Murton posted 65 yards on 13 attempts and 2 touchdowns. Matthews had 16 attempts with 64 yards, Kelly rounded out major contributors with 14 carries for 59 yards. All in all, the Gator offense turned in 359 yards of offense on the ground. Their rushing offense this week was higher than their entire offense against LSU the week before. Sr ILB Keenan Williams, 4 Tkls, 1 TFL The Gator Defense was much more active this week than it had been the last couple. In fairness, they did manage to get one sack last week against LSU, but the one lone good play on defense didn't help the team much in the blow out. This week alongside sacks, tackles for loss and take aways, they manage to keep Mizzu off the board the entire first half. Mizzu didn't do much of anything until the first string defense came off the field. Darrell Capela claims, easily, the defensive player of the game. The senior CB came away with 2ints to help continue the gator dominance in the first half. he only walks away with 2 tackles, but we will forgive that when you also have a couple take aways. DE Chad Iyiegbuniwe managed to find the score sheet after a few weeks to gain another sack on the year. He is back to leading the team in Sacks with Wilfredo Smith only half a sack behind him. No defender in this game has eye popping numbers as most of them only played half a game, and even in that half they weren't on the field that often between Florida controlling possession so well, and Floridas ability to get Missouri off the field. Florida Commits SS Paul Pomposelli(Left) and CB Juan Hartmann(Right) Florida has fallen a little over the last couple weeks in the recruiting Rankings. Unfortunately for the Gators they lost a few targets who committed elsewhere, which did include some needs. A Safety, TE, WR and FB. This left Florida to struggle and find the next wave of recruits to focus on. They did finally Land a couple targets, one who was a major need, Safety Paul Pomposelli out of Watkins Georgia chose Florida over Eastern Michigan. The 3* Freshman to be will likely be the direct backup for Chris Nieves. Nieves will be the only remaining SS on the team at the end of this season, and has spent the last two seasons playing the nickel spot. The Gators as a whole have very few options at Safety. Aside from Nieves, only Fr(Given redshirt this season) John Lee and Junior Joel Wright will be on the team next season. Shaun Thomas, is another safety that the Gators landed earlier this year who will be fighting in camp for a back up role. Wright is the starter to be next season across from Nieves. After that, Lee and Thomas will be fighting hard to see who will be starting alongside Pomposelli. Juan Hartmann will be joining a crowded CB room. Mendoza and Moore, 2 freshman that are currently redshirted, are more than likely the starters come next season in the 1 and 2 spot. They will battle it out again this season to see who is 1 and who is 2. Hartman will be fighting with everyone else to see who can claim that 3 and 4 spot. Regardless how this battle shapes out, Florida fans have a lot of reason to be excited about the secondary to come. That is a lot of 4* about to be on the field defending against the pass. The Gators currently Ranked 8th in the nation, 3 spots lower than their highest rank of 5. They are still 2nd in the SEC behind Tennessee. So far they have 14 Signed commits with 1 or 2 more possible signings this week. Forename Surname Pos Stars Potential Type City St Gordon Battista K 3* B- Power Miami FL Spec. 17. Rival Week Florida-Georgia. FL RB Ryan Bowman rushing against Georgia for 51 yards. Its half way through the college football season. That means only one thing! Its time for one of the best rivalry in college sports, as well as the largest cocktail party on the planet. Florida Georgia! The annual rivalry takes place between the two schools in Jacksonville Florida at TIAA Bank Field. Last season, the Bulldogs took the game in a highly contested, 21-16 Final. Florida, who at the time was fighting for their life to achieve a bowl game, had started to turned things around after starting the season 1-5. Florida ultimately would end the season 4-8. Georgia, had been defensively very good all season. Unfortunately for Florida, they had just started to figure out their offense. Their offense would continue to roll and Georgia would find themselves in the post season. Florida offensively played fairly decent all things considered. Only one turnover on a very costly fumble, over 250 yards through the air and a ok day on the ground. Though current starting running back, Ryan Bowman, has had this game circled on his calendar all year long. "Honestly...I still think about that game. It was my worst game of the season... and that fumble that probably cost us the game. You know it haunts me. I've been waiting to settle that score and show them who I truly am. I want them to remember my name." Bowman, the starting Junior back, took over the starting role last season about half way through the year and was an instant impact player for the Gators on the ground. Starting in only 6 games, but showing up in 7, he finished the season with 691 yards on 184 attempts, with 8 Touchdowns. 98.7 YPG. This season, through 6 games he has rushed for 694 yards on 98 carries, 6 touchdowns. 115.7 yards per game. While his touchdowns are 2 less, his support cast is vastly improved also making their own impact on the ground. SR RB Mason Matthews, 101 attempts for 513 yards, 4 Touchdowns This game will come down to the trenches. How well will each side defend against the run, pressure the quarterback...disrupt the play. On paper...the 5-1 Georgia looks like they should run away with it. However when you look at the stats.... the 3-3 Gators might make it closer than you think. Both teams have played six games. In rush yards allowed, Florida ranks 4th with 771. UGA ranks 5th with 784. In pass defense? The only team surprisingly worse than Florida(13th: 2067) is Georgia with 2085. Unfortunately this won't help Florida too much as they have an absolutely abysmal passing offense with 508 yards on the season. But with any luck..we might actually see some passing success this game. Georgia unfortunately does rank 5th with 1816 yards on the season. Jr QB Will Outman has had a good season, 18 Touchdowns with 6 Ints. Florida leads the SEC in rushing with 2006 yards. the second place team? 1363 yards. If Florida can find their rushing lanes, if they can keep the chains move and the clock ticking, keep the ball out of the dangerous Outman hand, this could be a very long afternoon for the Bulldog faithful. If the Gators can add to their SEC leading 13 sacks and keep the QB uncomfortable, it will still be close but the Gators might be able to come out ahead this time. It should be an exciting game! Rivalry games always seem to be a little funny. In recruiting news! Florida has had several new Commits after locking down 5* QB Max Howard. Florida has been locking down the state with 7 commits coming from the state of Florida. While last weekend fans woke up to some rough news(3 recruits, which include 2 flips, committed else where.), though all in all Florida has had another successful season so far. They currently ranked 12th in the country, 2nd in the SEC. Last season Florida grabbed some big hitters on Defense. This season, it seems to be about offense. More importantly the offensive line. On Defense, they locked down another edge rusher and a FS who, by some reports, could very well beat out John Lee, the FS they recruited last season. The better news? Most Recruiting sites have two more Recruits possibly committing to Florida very soon. 4* DT Michael Baig and 3* C Mark Yamada Offense Maximillian Howard QB 5* Bubba Payne OG 4* Christopher Turnbull OT 4* Joshua Leale OT 4* Edward Watkins WR 4* Defense John Harwell DE 4* Shaun Thomas FS 4*
