In this series we will take a look at how each of the redshirt freshmen, with a significant role, from coach smackemz initial recruiting class fared in their debut season.

Next in the list we will look at the 4* running back Michael March-Lillard

Role - Change of pace/RB #2/Returner

Running back is arguably one of the deepest positions on the Mountaineer roster, and the (Fr) Michael March-Lillard was a highly sought after 4* recruit that was signed in smackemz first class.  March-Lillard's primary role during his redshirt freshman season was to be the main change of pace back and also the primary return option for the Mountaineers.  As with most young players, MML had his bright spots as well as his early freshman struggles that led to an up and down campaign for the young running back.  On the season - Michael rushed 74 times for 261 yards and had 4 touchdowns.  He also was the primary return option and routinely used his speed to set the Mountaineers up with decent field position on Punts.

Best Game - Week 6 vs Iowa State - 9 carries for 79 yards (8.78 YPC)

March-Lillard's best game came in their only conference win of the season, where he showed flashes of the speed and agility that made him such a highly sought after recruit.  He broke off multiple big plays against the Cyclones that put the Mountaineers in great position to score easy points and to get the win.

Worst Game - Since MML wasn't a full time starter - we'll skip the worst game section.

Overall - MML showed flashes of the player that the Mountaineers hope he will become someday.  It's not always easy to shine with limited touches, but MML showed that there is something potentially special in his future.  He shows an ability to make explosive plays and it's no coincidence that his best game aligned with WVU's only conference win on the season.  We expect that the reps he received on offense and special teams will help in his further development.

Outlook - WVU has a very deep running back stable.  Michael March-Lillard will likely still occupy the #2 RB role during his (So) season as the team will primarily lean on the (Sr) duo of Chad Dolis and Craig Guzman.  However, as the roster stands today, Michael March-Lillard is in line to take over starting duties going into his (Jr) season - where he will share snaps with Jose Marrimon.
